Uh, hey all my party peeps. I was kinda hoping to ask for some advice, if you've got any to spare?

Back at that masquerade - major fun, by the way, would do again - we all got second magic, right? I was all, like, score, more magic! Except then I learned my second magic was... dark magic. Hexes, curses, shadow manipulation...

Here's the deal. Back home? I know one person one did all that jazz - especially the shadow stuff - and she's straight up evil... Magica De Spell. One of the worst people ever. I mean, if she ever came here? I'd be giving her nonstop punches to the face. I can give you more deets if you need, but trust me, she's called The Shadow Queen for a reason. Sooo learning that I can now do the stuff she does? Kinda made me feel icky all over. Like, I've never heard of someone using curses for good. Even the idea of using it on my enemies just ruffles my feathers.

But I know that's, like, super prejudiced and stuff! And I also know there's probably a ton of you with dark magic who do awesome work with it! So that's what I'm asking for - how to use my dark magic for good, besides fighting bad guys. I know I'll never turn into Evil De Stupidface no matter what, but, still, every little bit helps. Just whack me with the common sense bat ya'll have.

That's easy. Have to just remember that curses aren't always completely bad and what is a "curse" can depend on the person. Think small changes that some people would hate but you do them to people who want them.

That's not an uncommon fear. I guess just take things slowly, or focus on the stuff your enemy doesn't use for now. Power itself, unless maybe some cursed shit, doesn't make one evil. I like to think it just reveals who they really are.

I guess that's true... problem is, I don't know her limits. After she got out of her prison, she almost seemed unstoppable. It took my whole family working together to just take out one of her magical items.

So, in other words, I don't know what she doesn't use. We're not exactly buddy-buddy.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to how you choose to use your magic. There's no rule that your curses necessarily have to be evil or harmful. Despite what a fool housemate of mine might be trying to convince you, he's not evil in the least.

A lance is tool for killing. It really is not designed, by origin, for any other purpose. It has no morality of its own, it is simply that; a tool.

Yeah, I get that... magic's a tool like any other weapon. But even weapons can carry memories.

If you saw someone using a lance to hurt someone like... like a kid, it wouldn't be that easy to pick it up again, right?

...I'm a user of dark magic, known as the Witch of Betrayal in my world. To say the least, it comes naturally to a truly evil being like me.

Why not simply use your new power to serve your own ends? it's what I've always done.

... O-kay, guess my theory of "this world summons heroes" has a few holes in it. Good to know.

But "my own ends" is mostly helping people, going on adventures, solving mysteries, all that stuff. Not exactly into the whole "take over the world, mwahahaha" deal.

While I may not be a wielder of dark magic, I've been granted use of similarly dubious magic arts. Perhaps even moreso — given a choice between the two, I think I would prefer cursing people over robbing them of their free will. [Not that it's a misery contest or anything!]

But even in that case, I've found that there's been ample opportunities to use it for good, such as to help guide people in doing things they couldn't manage on their own.

So, there has to be some advantages to your arts as well! Especially since hexes and curses aren't necessarily dangerous: Perhaps you could stop enemies by frightening or even bothering them, and avoid anyone getting harmed.

Well, I've got no qualms about giving people the oogie-boogie, when you put it that way... I mean, look at me now. I'm not exactly what you'd call intimidating.

Magic's magic. Kinetic could drop a boulder on someone's head. Light could make someone think there's a solid floor in front of 'em when there's not. You could use the shadow stuff to hide until someone looking for you is gone.

Just because you got it doesn't mean you have to be terrible with it.

A long time ago, I found myself with a power that I came to fear, and the consequences were great. Since then, I've come to accept it as a part of me.

[That was the power over death, which Yuyuko still has now, though she hasn't tested it out yet since she's not entirely sure how similar her new death magic is to her old abilities.]

I'm sure plenty of others have said this to you already, but what harm or good an ability does is really up to you.

Yeah, it's nearly been on loop at this point... but it's still good to hear. Not just for the common sense, but that there's so many friendly people here. That's the big comfort.

Take it from a fallen angel himself, it's all about perception! Just because you use dark magic doesn't mean you have to use it for evil! Power is just power until we give it intention! For example, I use the power of darkness in my own world to break people from the status quo and bring them to Eden with my songs. It's different, it goes against the "light", so it's seen as rebellious and disruptive. Though, sometimes the light isn't pure either.

[There's a lot to unpack there, but hopefully Della gets the gist of it. Crow seems pretty proud of himself regardless.]

Instead of associating it with her, think of it as outdoing her completely at what she thinks she's strongest at. I'm sure darkness magic isn't the only thing you have in common and can do better than her as well.
