If that's the case then why not just make two sandwiches? You have an entire loaf to work with.

Well, slightly less than a loaf now, but you know what I mean.

That is what I have been trying to tell him. He insists now on attempting to make a grilled cheese sandwich to prove his point.

Your friend reminds me very much of my daughter when she was younger.

[ Unseen, a melancholy smile creeps into Jophrey's expression. ]

If they are aught alike, I'm afraid there's nary a thing to say that will dissuade him. The course is set, all that remains is to either welcome the ship when it sails triumphantly into port or salvage the wreckage when it sinks.

And make sure they don't set the kitchen aflame.

[ Not that he speaks from experience or anything. ]

[ The daughter...who died in the calamity? The blame for which Jophrey had decidedly laid at his feet?

He stares at the response feeling-- he's not entirely sure what he feels. Only that he doesn't like it. There's no way the man would bring it up in such a blasé manner, surely.

His response takes a noticeable while longer to come. ]

The kitchen is fine. I will make sure it stays that way.

[ The long pause isn't lost on him, and he too hesitates before replying. ]

Have I said aught to offend you?

[ Mentioning Lily felt almost like a betrayal, as if speaking of his daughter would steal the essence of her from his mind. But if anything her image became stronger as the memories came to him.

"Ssh...ssh...It's all right, darling. We'll just clean this up and...mayhap not mention it to your mother?"

A quiet laugh escapes him, despite himself. A remembrance that doesn't bring pain? That's...new. ]

To offend me? No.

[ Unfortunately, when he gets like this he shuts himself off. It doesn't help that he's unsure how to act around Jophrey now. ]
