[There's a number of false starts here. The video blipping on to a green eye then cutting out. Then snapping back on to a shock of blue hair.]

[Nope, it's out again.]

[One more time now. The picture is askew and there's a tall, blue-haired man tapping the lens of the camera, tongue sticking out of the corner of his mouth. Some of you may recognize him from the training grounds at the Red Spring. He was the one going around asking people to hurt him. You know. Like a crazy person.]

Okay, is it working? Screw it.

So, this thing is some sort of communicator, right? Well, for those of you who can see this, the name's Darin Altway, Master Blacksmith, at your service.

Now, I know we're all here for ~magical~ reasons and whatnot, but if this world is anything like mine, then you guys are gonna need top notch gear to prevent you from.

Y'know.

Dying.

And that's where I come in! Like I said, I'm a Master Blacksmith, and I'm here to offer up my services! I might not have a forge set up, but that doesn't mean I can't perform general maintenance, and if anyone can point me to some resources, I can start stockpiling!

Master Blacksmith, huh? Well, sign me up for when you're able to make weapons. I'm aiming to be a knight, so I'm going to need a proper weapon. Can you make something like a double-edged battle axe? I don't know if that's what you call it, but you get the idea.

You're talking about a Great Axe! Sure, I can make one of those, but I don't think I've ever seen a knight wield something like that. At least not where I'm from.

Of course I wouldn't mind! Master or not, I can still improve under another teacher! The only blacksmith I ever really worked for was my old man.

Without her original powers, Lucy feels as helpless as a newborn baby, so having some armor, or a good knife, at some point in the future might not be a bad idea.]

Whenever you're able to start smithing things, I'd be interested in some armor, and maybe a nice dagger too. How would you want to be paid? Money? Or would you be willing to negotiate a different form of payment?

[She doesn't really know what else she could offer him. She's not like Noiz with his tech skills, but that won't stop her from trying to figure out other options.]

Well, considering I got a lead on a forge that can use some extra hands, it shouldn't be long before I can whip something up. Of course, I gotta check the place out and maybe source my own materials.

I'd hate to use up the forge's stock.

But an armor and dagger shouldn't be any kind of issue. What type of armor were you after? Scale? Plate? Steel? And what about the dagger? Something sturdy? Or something easily concealed?

We can worry about payment once we figure that out!

[Oh crap... She didn't think far ahead enough about a specific type of armor. She's not even that knowledgeable about armor in the first place since in her world, one of the only places to view them are in a museum.]

Uh, well... Something light, but still strong enough to take some punishment. As you can see, I'm not exactly the muscular type, so I wouldn't be able to move well if the material is heavy. As for the dagger, I'll go with something easily concealed.

[Now that she's deprived of her original powers, Lucy thinks she'd prefer sneak attacks over charging right in. At least, until she's able to transform into bigger, stronger animals.]

Hm...Light but durable...

I might be able to whip something up but I need to see what resources and materials are available to me. I should probably start making connections at shops in the market, otherwise I'll have to go out and hunt for materials myself.

Not that I mind.

As for an easily concealed dagger, that should be easy enough. That one will likely be done first before the armor. Is that okay?

If we're talking general maintenance, I wouldn't mind having you take a look at Greyswandir. I know they've removed some of its power, but I want to make sure it's still in good nick, as far as the steel is concerned.

You said some of its power had been removed? What was it previously capable of?

It was forged on the steps of Tir-na Nog'th, a sort of... spectral city that appears in the night sky above Amber on clear nights. Because of that, it possesses properties which make it extra effective against ghosts, and creatures of Chaos.

Or, rather, it is supposed to possess those properties. I think it's just an ordinary sword now.

Generally, your best bet for resources is going to be to get a stream of income, and start negotiating with local shops. I've seen a few.

You might also find a smithy that'll employ you.

Believe me when I say I'll prove to be more than handy. I've got a lead on a smithy where I can set up shop until I can strike out on my own, but I'm gonna have to introduce myself to the local merchants. Honestly, this kinda stuff is old hat for me. Though I was wondering if I could find some rare materials out in the wild.

I'm sure if you look around. What kind of materials are you looking for, exactly?

That really depends. I don't like the idea of wearing heavy armor, and I don't have a clue how to use a sword. [She steps back and turns so he can get a look at the gun on her waist.]

But if you're able to make something light and protective, maybe?

Honestly? Anything. I'm not picky. Back home, if a blacksmith really wanted to test their skills, they'd work with monster parts. Monsters are inherently imbued with a lot of mana. Forging weapons and armor out of a monster's hide or carapace usually made it not only an instant masterwork, but afforded its owner special benefits.

I've never had the opportunity to cut my teeth on mats like that, so I'm wondering if I can get something like that out in the wild here.

Believe it or not, I think I can manage something. I'd have to source the materials, but something lightweight like leather and ceramic might be good.
