In light of recent events, I have some things to say.

The loss of life in Celliwig is deeply regrettable, and while we were able to save many from Lestari, there were still those who did not survive. I know that many of you may be feeling that you did not do enough.

[He certainly feels all those losses, for civilian casualties are always regrettable.]

But we may also look upon these failures and learn from them. Those who fought the dragon now know how it behaves and what its weaknesses are, so if it returns, we will be more prepared. Mourn the dead, but look upon these losses as a way to better prepare for the future, so we may not repeat our past mistakes.

Even those who aren't warriors should...Especially those in any position of power. Learn, grow, and keep moving forward.

An excellent point. Someone with power who does not learn from their mistakes risks failing those they are in charge of, be they civilians or warriors. Likewise, those in power must not take failure personally, and put their feelings aside to do what is needed of them.

I can understand going over the catastrophes and thinking about what might have been done differently, and how we could have succeeded. But, all we can do now is reflect and channel those thoughts into asking ourselves what can we do next time.

I agree. We should transform our past mistakes into chances at future successes.

I'm afraid however that many will lose morale or start infighting.

Perhaps. Let us hope that it does not last long or they realize what is more important.

We will have to set a good example for them, and remind them why we were called upon to this world.

I'll admit, I was going through something when this all happened, and didn't participate in the fighting effort... I thought everyone would do fine without me. And realistically, my presence alone wouldn't have changed anything.

But seeing what had happened... I realize I can't let my emotions get in the way of what's important.

In this case, it would have taken more than a single person to win the conflicts with the dragon or stone giant, yes. I fear that those failures happened because there weren't enough warriors taking part in either conflict. However, do not discount the fact that in some situations, even a single contribution may turn the tide.

What do you think is most important right now, in the wake of these events?

Even if my contribution wouldn't have changed much... If twenty people like me had done their best, then perhaps things would have taken a different turn. Some people would still be alive right now and Celliwig wouldn't be in ruins.

My thoughts exactly. Let us hope that those who chose not to fight will learn from their mistake next time. We should also more evenly distribute our forces next time, for I fear that may also have played a part in how these events turned out.

Mhm. We need better organization. The problem is that Arthur and the others give us missions without any direction. Ideally we'd need a few amongst our number to step up and take charge when it comes to such things...

But that is tricky, too. We'd need someone who is skilled when it comes to organization, who is a good strategist and who would be charismatic enough for everyone to follow. I fill the "good at organization" spot but that's about it. And even if someone like that showed up, we would realistically have no reason to trust them.

Perhaps there are those already here with the skills and personality that you describe, but they currently lack rank and authority. They simply need an opportunity to demonstrate their leadership skills.

Mhm. I have been here for a couple months now, and I have yet to see anyone earn that much authority. I think if they got knighted, it would give them more authority... But they'd also need to like, shine during a mission I guess. With so many people from different backgrounds, rank alone would mean little.

Yes. Some of us were quite influential or had some manner of military rank in our own worlds that do not mean much in this one.

But I find the words most worth hearing are the ones hardest to listen to.

They can be, yes. But oftentimes, it's better to hear a less pretty truth than be told something more reassuring.

That is very kind of you. Sometimes, even if you know already, you just need to hear it from someone else to stop fretting.

That was my thought at well. We need to become better organized, and plan ahead in case of unexpected attacks like these.

I'm not much of an organized army sort of person, but having some people on call for things like this might be a good thing for the future. We were all over the place, and I don't doubt a lot of people who could've really helped were busy elsewhere, for one reason or another.

It just makes me worry if someone with ill intentions sees this mess and realizes our resources are spread too thin to take multiple attacks at the same time...

Just one more reason we should work on doing better. We should also make contingency plans, in case there aren't enough of us to succeed yet again.

That would be a good idea. The trouble is, we don't have a leader who isn't convalescing from injuries at the moment, and even when he isn't, I don't yet fully trust his capacity to bring us together as of now. So how else can we give some structure to this?

Perhaps the answer is to look to our own. There may be those among us who have leadership skills and experience who will be willing to lend their aid. The king cannot be everywhere and tend to all matters, and there may be other times when he is sick or injured.

It can be easy to dwell upon such circumstances, especially when so many lives were lost. But even when we cannot help but dwell, we must move forward.

I was a naval officer in my world, and I have experienced my share of defeat and loss. Likewise, I have had to give similar speeches to my crew when we experience a defeat.

[Usually he came out victorious and with little to no loss of life. But things happen and he's run into situations with factors that even he couldn't plan for.]

I'm curious, then. As a military officer, what do you believe our next steps should be? What preparations do you think would help avoid catastrophe during whatever crisis comes next?

I believe we need to be better unified. We need to determine who is best suited for what sorts of crisis, so that they may be called upon for future situations. For example, those with healing magic should decide if they are better suited to search and rescue or combat medicine.

It may also be a good idea to determine who has leadership and tactical skills, because all that magic may not do anyone any good if we are unfocused and do not know what to do.

The various cities also need to put up better defenses, and have evacuation plans in place. Camelot should also consider preparing a refugee plan in case we get more in the future.

Quite a few, though your suggestions have covered most of them. Beyond that ... organized training to help people develop their magical ability and ability to function as a cohesive unit in combat, and stockpiling tactically useful magical items.

I concur. Let us hope that others agree with us and are willing to put in the effort.
