They burned effigies of dragons to celebrate all the times the city had defended itself against them.

There are dragons here, and as far as I know, they're generally peaceful. I read that attacking them unprovoked is an offence.

And since the locals are so pro-dragon, burning anything resembling a dragon in front of someone might cause a little upset.

Well, I wouldn't make them look like *good* dragons. That would be rude.

But do they really not have any evil dragons here? Not even red ones?

Probably? Doesn't sound like they're very common at all, though.

Are red dragons bad where you come from?

Oh, yes. All of the chromatic dragons are bad: White, blue, green, black, and red. They're generally destructive and predatory, and the red ones are the biggest and scariest of those. It's a cause for major celebration if a town survives a dragon attack--let alone several.

There's good dragons, too, but you don't hear about those as much, since they don't cause as many problems. They're metallic dragons: Brass, bronze, copper, gold, and silver.

Why would they get mad? Fire mean something shitty where you come from? Back home, there's a fire festival that starts on the solstice. Burning things is the idea!

Having big bonfires and watching things burn with food and drink should be a holiday on its own~ This one just happens to have dragon-shaped things involved.

Of course, good food and drink are necessary. Plus, this time of year, I always do very well on fireworks. Then, once everyone's sufficiently drunk, you ride to the nearest village that belongs to your enemy and put their fire out, so it's a festival that potentially yields bloodshed, which is the best sort.

In my experience, dragons tend to see most things we mortals do as beneath them and unworthy of their attention. They probably won't even notice what shape your paper dolls are.

Actually, there were baby dragons hanging out in the meadow when I arrived. They had decided that wildflowers should be their hordes.

Were they very pretty wildflowers? Did they sit atop them and make little tsew-tsew noises?

lol I'm not sure about little tsew-tsew noises, but they definitely growled and yelped and had these teeny tiny little roars. It was pretty adorable. I don't know that the wildflowers were particularly pretty, but each of them had a different sort that they preferred, and in order to make friends with them and take them back to their mother we had to make matching flowercrowns - one for them and one for us.
