Let's see...we're already trading with Elpheme, Celliwig has apparently already turned down previous attempts at an alliance, Celliwig isn't currently hostile to us, trade rarely results in mass bloodshed and death, and the traders haven't upset a minotaur...need I go on? It's common sense.

If they have already turned down previous attempts, what makes you think they will change their mind now? "Trading?" Who determines value, them or us? What prevents them from asking for more than they deserve?

There is no currency in the Galactic Alliance; it is unneeded. You place a lot of confidence in something that has no meaning. I do not even understand what is required from these people that cannot be obtained for yourselves. Are there not resources everywhere in abundance?

If you don't have currency, you don't have trade. If you don't have trade, you obviously don't understand the value of it, and I don't have the time or inclination to give you a middle school economics crash course.

To me, it almost seems like a false choice. We can accept the trials and continue the flow of trade, right? And if the trials don't work out, we can increase our cooperation with the traders instead.

We don't have much to lose from at least giving Celliwig's methods a try first.

Nothing really, except there's no promises we'll pass them or that we'll benefit from doing them.

Also, it's hard to benefit from trade when you don't have much to offer in return.

The first part of any trade negotiation is figuring out what you have that they want. Everyone wants something they don't have, after all.

I didn't have objections to trying to work things out with them, but I think those who do might be wary that the traders are working only towards their own self-interests and won't cooperate well with us. I wish we knew more about their goals and intentions.

I don't, unfortunately, but really this was mostly aimed at the [idiots] people who think invading Celliwig is at all a good idea. You can't ever know if your trade partner is being entirely trustworthy, but it's still better than a war.

Celliwig may also be a threat to us, although I am not sure how. I haven't been here long enough to know what the circumstances are between New Camelot and Celliwig, but I don't think an all-out war is going to be the fast and easy solution people think it is.
