Neither is anyone else. The average person wants to respect that, and you should do the same for them unless you enjoy being marked a threat.

People [Rei deliberately avoids using the word "human"] are social animals at their core. A lot of societal taboos and morals are built off those instincts, both from our ability to feel empathy and our ability to feel fear. It's better, evolutionarily, for us to not be offing each other all the time.
