I'm going to go ahead and ask the obvious question here, but does anyone have any idea who opened up the veil between the living and the dead? Because they have a lot to answer for.
Of course, if this is you and you're listening to this, now would be a great time to come out and gloat about your evil plan. Come on, really lord it over us. You know you want to!
[It's a vague attempt at levity -- he doesn't actually think this will provoke anyone -- but it's not really convincing. If anything, he sounds more frustrated.]
The other explanation is that some inexperienced magic users tried to do a ritual that went horribly awry, I suppose, but you'd have to be desperate to do something so risky. Still, if that's the case, you should come clean about it anyway. If... you're even still alive.
[He's about to reach to end the feed, but a thought occurs to him, and he looks towards the sky.] Ah, right. One thing I do know is that what you can see in the sky? That's definitely the calamity. I went to the end of the world, so I can say for sure that it's the same thing. We can't afford for time to be unfrozen again.
private to kate and rei
[Right after, Kate and Rei will receive a seperate message:]
Did either of you notice anything weird about the stuff you took? Far be it for me to cast aspersions on my lovely partners in crime, I'm just curious.

[A pause as he types his actual answer.]
It's inert so far.
But I haven't tried hanging or lighting it yet, so I can't rule anything out. Hoping to get a read on how old the bones are before I do anything crazy.
Crazier than swiping it in the first place, I mean
[har har har.]
and yours?

[suuure claude]
What's that supposed to mean, Kate?

having weird thoughts since I got it.

Dangerous ones? Trying to get you to do something for it, or what?
[At least she's noticed them, though? That whole "you're not bonkers because bonkers people don't wonder if they're bonkers" thing????]

( don't be so nosy old man. )
checked when we were there. couldn't pull anything off it.
( or either of the other pieces, actually. that should have been a good thing, but all it does is raise more questions about what's up with these things.
and if anything at all is up with Rei's. )

Feels like we learn something new about this damn place's magic bullshit every week, so better be careful not to rule anything out just because it's beyond our capabilities.
[A chilling thought, but a salient one, anyway.]
well, way I see it there's two most likely possibilities for these things. One, they got buried with the Fisher Whatsit out of some kind of last respect for his belongings.
Or two... the items were cursed enough to get tossed down there for safekeeping.

[Which isn't to say that he really trusts Kate or Rei not to misuse anything they got, considering he went on the pretext of stealing for personal gain, but at least they did the heavy lifting for him. And he can keep tabs on them, as opposed to complete strangers.
Might as well be honest about his intentions now everything has already gone to shit, right?]
I'm guessing what really happened is that another group came after us and took the corpse, and used it to cause everything. If that's the case, I made the wrong call. Sorry.

this whole thing is ridiculous, from the corpse being the key to all this shit to whatever the fuck is in this emerald, but ultimately; )
doesn't matter what happened then. shit's done.
( they're failing, and it's horrifying, and it's only the need to keep going, to keep fighting to get home that Kate can hold on to right now. )
let's find out if any of these are useful first.

Steamrolling right over poor Kate's redirection, he comments,]
How leaderlike of you. But there's no guarantee we could have dragged that thing outta the pit and kept our lives. Was a sensible call at the time with the information you had. We'll have to cast a bigger net to tamp down variables next time Avalon goes to shit.
[... and then back to kate,]
Starting with the artifacts, I guess. A date range on the items should help. That or looking up records to figure out if they were added to the tomb at the same time as the corpse, or if it was reopened to add them later.

Good idea. I'll go to the Archivist's to try and identify the painting. Want me to look into your stuff too? If you send over pictures and as much detail as you can, I'll do some digging.
[uhhh] I'll prioritise what I can learn about the emerald, since it might be affecting you, Kate. Or you can come with, your choice.

be good to get out of here.
( even she's getting sick of the number of hours she's spending at off limits in an attempt to keep herself busy. )
