[ It takes Mickey several attempts to get this right - this technology is WAY more than what he's used to. First the video keeps cutting out, then it's upside-down, but finally... the image stays! Relieved, Mickey waves a friendly hello from his room - to his right is a panting pup, and on his hat is his familiar, a brown sprite-like thing with tattered clothes. ]

Gosh, you think I got it right this time? I sure hope so... well, guess there's only one way t'find out!

[ Clears throat! ]

Hiya, folks! My name is Mickey Mouse! These are my pals, Pluto -

[ "Rowf!" Pluto happily barks. ]

And... uh, well... they told me this lil guy is my "familiar", not really sure what it all means, so I'm not sure what to call him. I thought about "Pluto Junior" -

[ Said familiar pinches Mickey's ear, hard, and Mickey visibly winces. ]

But, uh, as you can see, he... doesn't really like it all that much, so I guess if you have any suggestions when it comes to names... Oh, right! I almost forgot why I was usin' this thing in the first place!

See, back in my world, I'm a musketeer - guess it's what you'd call a "knight" here! And I still haven't really gotten a hang of this magic stuff... but I figured I should keep up my swordplay while I'm here, so I don't get rusty! Magic's useful and all, but the more ways you can help out the better, right?

So I was wonderin' if there's anyone out here who would be willin' to help with that - training with swords every so often! Thanks a million!

Same here! We don't have these kinda gizmos and whatnots in my home either! I'm still not really sure how any of it works, to be honest.

I would tell you it's probably some kind of advanced computing or something, but knowing this place? It's probably just magic.

France? [ Makes sense, being a musketeer and all. ] I have a particular fondness for Paris, actually. Where in France are you from?

[ He had pulled very heavily on his find memories of Paris as he had struggled through carving out his Pattern. It seems almost ironic that he'd run into someone from France so soon afterward. Albeit, not the same France he's used to. ]

Why, gosh, I'm from Paris too! Ain't that a coincidence! Born and raised there!

A true Parisien, then. That certainly is a coincidence. A happy one, even!

[ Corwin had been living in Europe during the time of the musketeers, and remembered vividly well the politics surrounding the regiments. ]

N-no... The last time there were musketeers in the France I'm familiar with, the country was ruled by King Louis XVI. The position went away along with France's monarchy, shortly thereafter.

Whoa! You mean you don't have royals at all? I can't even imagine that!

I guess it would be hard to imagine, if that's all that you're used to. But you can rest assured that France has been doing just fine as a constitutional republic.
