I see. Where I am from, there is a class of arcane user commonly known as "warlock." It is an umbrella term for those who seek power by creating pacts for that power with a patron. Typically, patrons tend to be things like major or minor gods, anthropomorphized and empowered spirits of concepts (nature, wealth, etc.), or powerful denizens of other realms (demons, fey, etc.). That sounds very similar to what you've described, and I suppose that could be another shared link that creates this tangled chain of realms that is scattered at our feet, so to speak.
