[Izzy is doing her very best, when the video starts, to look presentable and like she knows what she's doing. She is, however, fourteen and so the tension is real. She looks nervous and a bit uneasy. Although her hair is all neatly combed for once. And a new outfit, but it mostly makes her look like she's trying too hard.]

Um, hi. I'm Izzy. I... kinda want to move out of the hotel. I don't really know how to cook and I can't just keep eating bread rolls and cookies after work every day. If anyone wants to meet somewhere public so I can get to know you and see if it's- like, a good idea to move in?

I can help with rent, but I don't really know how to cook or anything. And you have to be okay with me playing the violin. I need to practice and all. I can clean, not like I do a lot of it but enough to keep my room from being a safety hazard. And- like other chores if they aren't super degrading.

Like- I guess the other thing is don't be a shithead who tries to make me go to fucking school.

[...she realized she was doing so well at not swearing until that last line. Looks deeply embarrassed (she tried to be respectable), and clicks off the feed with that.]

Well, there's no real school here. At least not like back home. So I doubt anyone will force you.

That said, you should practice the magic you have. It's kinda useful.

I do want to learn exactly how my making things float works. But I'm not going to school for that.

If I need to learn from someone I'd rather a mentor.

You have kinetic magic? Same as me. I also found out recently I can do more than just that, but it's been making a huge mess.

There are mentors and professors that can show you all of that. There are safe spots to practice it. Training grounds. I don't count that as school.

I haven't been able to do it when I want, it just kinda happens. Usually when I'm practicing violin or painting.

I don't count that as a school either. I'd be okay going places like that.

If you arrived very recently then yeah, that'll happen a lot. It happened to me too. But you'll get the hang of it.

I can show you the training grounds. I've been using them a lot myself recently.

You play the violin? For how long?

I'd like to stop breaking cups and plates when they drop out of the air. So anything that helps with that.

Um... like six years? It's one of the things I've just always had in my schedule.

I guess making things float can be dangerous if they float fast enough huh?

It seems okay from my trip in the lake. But I'll probably need new strings for it eventually.

And maybe replace it with one that's ACTUALLY mine.

Yes. I managed to levitate and push some logs once to defend myself and my friend against some trolls? I think? But it was really useful.

I work at the music shop and I'm pretty good at maintaining the instruments. If your violin is damaged, I can help you fix it. One of my bandmates also plays violin, he's really good.

Throwing whole logs seems like it'd be a lot of effort.

But I've never had magic before, I don't really know how well it works.

And I guess it could do with a bit of maintainance, after the whole lake thing.

Even if they paid you to go to school? I was a little worried about going to class when we were in this whole other world that needs our help, but Camelot really wants us to make sure we know what we're doing. Enough that they'll give us money for attending.

Plus, magic class seems like a good idea even without that.

Ah. [That brings Miku up short, and her expression turns a little downcast.] I know how that goes. I used to be part of the problem, a little bit. I've changed since then - at least, I like to think I have - but I know very well what you mean. I'm sorry. I'm not sure I'll be much help with finding a home, either, I haven't done that myself yet, though I want to.

It's fine. Figuring out what you did wrong and facing it is the first step to fixing it.

I admit I had some help with that, but... yes. Yes, it is, and I'm going to keep working on it. It does mean I won't be much help there, though.

I'm a little surprised this place doesn't have something like a housing brochure? We have the quest board, we have everything on the network, it would make sense if there were some kind of "roommate wanted" board.

That's true enough. But it's still surprising not to see it at all, isn't it? Unless I just didn't search the right terms and I missed Avalon's Craigslist equivalent. Which is... likely.

I think you're probably right, either way. It'd be better to meet people first and then talk business.

Ah, it's a website that's... I think it'd be easier to call it classified ads? So a digital version of the flyer I was thinking of. [She probably shouldn't assume people will just know what she's talking about, oops.]

Why would you put a classified ad on the internet? That seems stupid.

Not if nobody reads the newspaper anymore. Cheaper, too, I feel like newspaper ads are expensive.

Not everyone has AOL. Or a computer. Or an extra phone line.

A... what? Phone line? That doesn't have anything to do with the internet. I don't know what AOL is either, aside from the service we're using now.

You connect your computer to a modem, connect that to a phone line to access the internet. I know that this works on magic but at home you can't just access the internet without dial up.

[There's a long pause while Miku's eyes unfocus. Then, unsure:]

Does Lydian just have hundreds of phone lines...? No, that can't be right, there's no way wi-fi works that way. Especially when I can get internet on my cell phone, while I'm talking on it.

What's a cell phone? Is that like a car phone or a pager?

It's a handheld phone just like the ones we got when we arrived, though this one's more advanced than the one I have at home. [She holds up her Japanese cell phone for emphasis; she's on the other one, can't hold it up.] You can call people, browse the internet, play games, get directions... They're very convenient. A little expensive, too, and the plan can be murder if you overuse it. But it's hard to imagine life without one.

Those don't exist where I'm from. Mom has a phone in her car, but its a part of the car. My sister has a pager. And both of those were things mom went on and on about how expensive they were.

I just figured magic was needed for these to work, especially with how fast they load pictures and even video.

Oh, my. I... kind of remember those being a thing, some time ago? I think pagers still exist where I'm from, they're just very rarely used. But no, there's a signal broadcast over the whole country that makes these work. Outside Avalon, I mean. AOL is probably magically-based, I've never seen a cell tower here.

So in your world you have phones that are just radios?

It's... probably a similar technology? Cell phones connect to several towers to get a good signal, as I understand it. Something about how they work. It's probably close enough, though. Including that if you're too far away or too deep inside a building, the signal's weak, and you can't use it.

[She doesn't understand how she's gotten on this topic, but she doesn't really mind it? It's giving her someone to talk to, and that's always good.]

[She had always masked her own uncertainties with anger when she was younger but Kaoru is naturally empathetic so when she sees someone who's nervous her response is to smile. She has a very reassuring sort of smile and she though she wasn't deliberately trying to look presentable she's used to dressing cutely on a day to day basis. Her hair is also fire-engine red. But maybe compared to this whole crazy situation it really isn't all that strange.]

Right? When I was a kid, I used to complain about Minamoto not making more sweets. [Not in earnest, just because she wanted to be difficult.] But if I never see another cookie in my life it'll be too soon!

[What she wouldn't give for one of Minamoto's home cooked meals!]

Shiho and I are looking for a place. We haven't found one yet but if we had a third roommate I think it'd be easier! Neither of us are really good at cooking but we're okay with sharing chores. And I think we'd all be around the same age so it'd be more convenient.

[Like sharing clothes, she means.]

It's probably easier than sharing space with boys anyway.

Or adults who might want to make us into someone we aren't. But I'd like to hang out with you both first, before agreeing to anything.

[Between the comment about school and now the one about adults she has a sense that either this is a case of teenage rebellion or just that this person has had terrible experiences with both. As someone who had despised adults and been dismissive about school when she was ten, she understands that coming out trying to talk about those things wouldn't work.

So, she notes it then chooses not to discuss it.]

right? not offense to boys but they can get a little weird about things.

and i think hanging out first would be great! it can be a girls' day out! though i'm not sure what things there are here to do for fun...

what do you like to do? you mentioned playing the violin! could we listen to you play some time?

I'd rather something where we can talk? I never really had a lot of going out with friends at home. We would hang out at my place, or her's. If I had my skateboard we could go to a park or something?

[The outcast loner is bad at friends. Big shock.]

[It was only after she sent it that she remembered that, oh yeah. She said 'if I had'. Oops? So she quickly follows up with,]

[Ah, to go back to the days when she could just go out and buy stuff for her friends!]

but the park seems like a good place to hang out. since we're all stuck in the inn meeting in each other rooms would be a little sad, i think.

[It's fine. A lot of her friends are bad at friends or started off that way. Kaoru is good enough at friends to offset it.]

[Izzy is pretty sure she's never had that much excitement in her. Ever. And the only person she's ever met who could be that excited was her eldest brother, and he only got like that about Jens and football.]

I can't do many tricks. Just not fall off and sometimes jump it down stairs. I guess the park it is. Cool.

[If it's any consolation, neither of her two best friends ever had that much excitement in them except in special circumstances.]

then let's meet at the park. what time is good for you? shiho usually isn't awake until at least after noon so any time before that probably won't work.

[Because Shiho has an unfortunate habit of sleeping with her gun and shooting people who wake her up with tranquilizer darts. Kaoru doesn't actually know if she has any ammo left at this point and she's not keen to find out like this.]
