[ the boy on the screen does not look particularly thrilled to be doing this but has determined that it must be a local custom to send open messages in video form... so here he is. he's also still dressed like he's ready to get back in the cockpit any time now. ]
The purpose of this message is twofold. First, it is inefficient to explain myself to others repeatedly. To counter this, I will provide everyone with basic information. If there are other questions, then I will address them.
I am Ensign Ledo. I am a soldier in the Galactic Alliance Army of Humankind. I pilot a Machine Calibre Anti-Hideauze Annihilation Weapon, designation Chamber K6821. Chamber is an artificial intelligence that provides situational combat analysis and life support.
The Hideauze are a lesser species that threaten the existence of humanity. It is my duty to subjugate and eliminate them. This is how the Galactic Alliance ensures the stable development of the human race. Efficiency is the highest priority. To the Alliance, that which is useless should not exist, nor desire to.
[ he takes a steadying breath — because machine calibre pilots are calm about this sort of thing — although someone with a perceptive eye might notice him tense as a small creature with tentacles and an iridescent glowing shell floats about in the air behind him, staying just out of his peripheral vision but certainly visible to the camera. it doesn't seem particularly monstrous all miniaturised, but maybe if it were larger..? ]
This thing called a familiar seems to have adopted the shape of one form of Hideauze, but as I am told, it is not advisable to shoot or kill it; I am forced to tolerate its presence.
[ that should be more than enough exposition for everyone, right? ]
Secondly, I have many questions of my own, but I do not expect them to all be answered here. Since it seems to be up for debate, I wish to understand more about this situation with the ones called "Fae". I am told this is not a conflict like what I am familiar with, that these are sentient creatures possessing similar motivations to humans who are not an existential threat. Therefore a different outcome is desired than simple eradication.
However, the air is so abundant in this world it will likely never run out. There is plentiful clean water. In short, you have everything here necessary to support life. What is it that is so incompatible?
I have also noticed that there are many who object to the idea of war or conflict. What then is your purpose? How do you contribute in a productive way to society?
That is all.

If the Hideauze are a lesser species, why do they threaten humanity's existence?
no subject
To combat them, we must contend with the enemy itself and the continuous threat of the hostile environment and limited resources.
We have a place called Avalon in my world; it is one of humanity's greatest achievements and the closest thing anyone could call a "homeland". The Hideauze would destroy it all if given a chance.

[ the words all come out in a rush, frustration plain in his tone if not his body language. he still thinks about his last mission before coming here and has gone over again and again what he might have done differently, even knowing that there was nothing he could have done alone to change any of it. he's sure what happened had nothing to do with humanity not being smart enough. how could anything else be to blame but the Hideauze themselves? ]
What makes you think it should be so easy? What was the enemy you faced? What was the tactical situation?

[ He doesn't want to give more information about his own war for humanity. Not with his real name attached. Not on an open network. He encrypts the feed to hide from prying eyes, but even that's not a guarantee, when he doesn't know the strength of this network's security and the encryption itself. ]
I'll tell you about my enemy. But not here. Meet me in person.

[ wouldn't it be better that way? then truly, nothing would be lost, and humanity would be safe. everyone wins! why is it such a difficult concept to understand? and why is he letting a kid get under his skin like this anyway? when did it become any of his business anyway to question these things? he's just a soldier. ledo manages not to follow that particular thread any further, not needing to add guilt into the mix too.
he has too many questions and not nearly enough answers and the constant unease that comes with knowing at any moment he could turn around and see an enemy. yet and still, they call it a familiar as if he should feel endeared towards it. at least when he speaks again, he's restored the calm evenness to his tone again, as he should. ]
A "pest" and an "enemy" are essentially the same if their actions hinder progress. I don't see the point in making the distinction.
[ ledo doesn't see the point of all the secrecy either, but in the interest of getting answers to his questions, he's willing to deal with it. ]
Fine. Send me a location.

Short answer: Conflict, battle, and war are all inevitable. How we resolve them shapes not only the universe but ourselves. Nothing is useless, and a whole that has parts of itself torn out is damaged no matter what the circumstances.
How's that?
no subject
Perhaps in an ideal world without enemies and with infinite resources, that might be true. It becomes necessary to assign value to things and then discard what is harmful or unsustainable in any other scenario. Any group is only as strong as its weakest link. It will harm the "whole" if you fail to remove what prevents it from attaining its greatest potential. How could this be damaging if the outcome is better than before?

The reality is that in the present, we must fight, and in the future, we must continue to fight until the threat of the Hideauze is eliminated. You have many judgements, and now that I am aware that other worlds exist, I can't say that your logic is incorrect. However, if you tried to live and think that way in my world, you and your people would not last long.
no subject
Obviously, I advocate the latter. I have a very close friend who'd agree with you, though.
no subject
[ but then again he probably sleeps better, in general, not having his dreams also filled with information and propaganda but he's far from enlightened enough to realise this. ]
Did you know that friend from your world or did you meet them here? I have met some who have come from places that sound at least somewhat recognisable as productive societies. Others seem to come from places where it is common to have completely opposing views but then also talk of progress. You cannot move forward if half of the people are moving forward while the other half is pulling in the opposite direction. It is, for this reason, I bother to ask questions; being met with resistance at every turn is unproductive. Negotiations are challenging enough without concepts that make no sense.

[Man, he did not expect he would have to explain this so many times here!]

Nonetheless, I will need to explain myself to fewer than I would if I had not.
Does that matter to you in some way?

That's a lot of information that probably isn't very important here you know.
[She hates to break it to him, but they're a long ways away from his Galactic Alliance or his Machine Calibre Anti-Hideauze Annihilation Weapons. Not just in the sense of technologically, although Olivia has no way of confirming or denying in that case, but more-so in the sense of the things of his world being of much influence here.]
Your culture must be vastly different if war and combat are the only factors you can think of that designate somebody's worth in society. I kind of pity the sort of upbringing you must have had.
[Which still doesn't entirely answer any of his questions, but she felt it definitely needed to be said.]
How does your society even function if you don't have people who's purpose is to grow food? Surely you don't rely on some sort of slave force?

[ someone or something shrunk his robot somehow, which is an unending source of frustration in being a constant reminder that he has little power here via the avenues he's accustomed to. fortunately, he can at least address her questions instead of thinking about that again. ]
There are finite resources in space, and therefore it is necessary to assign value according to one's ability to contribute to the fight. This is understood. My upbringing enabled me to be productive and protect humanity. What more could anyone aspire to?
[ he chooses to omit the part where he had thoughts about this himself before he got here. all he wants now is the familiarity of home, exactly as he remembers it, war or not. there's a comfort in that, in its way. ]
Many things are fully automated and require no human input whatsoever, except perhaps to further optimise those systems, but these are not duties that necessitate a dedicated task force. I am not familiar with the procedures since they are irrelevant to me, but everyone is provided with the nutrients required for their individual metabolic needs. On this stable foundation, everything else is built.
no subject
[Some people don't appreciate all the superfluous details, but Olivia didn't mind that much.]
Much more! What about the ability to create, and to innovate? Imagine impossible things, and then find ways to make some of the things that you thought were impossible happen! If all you focus on is fighting, how can your society ever hope to expand beyond that? How will you ever learn the merits of what you're fighting for, or the joy of living life to its fullest?! Life shouldn't simply be about survival, there's so much more!
[She's a bit of an artist so... the idea that his life has nothing to it but fighting is both alarming and depressing.]
Automated?
[They were able to fully automate the labor required for food, but not for war? Their society still seems rather backwards to Olivia, since it seems like keeping people out of harm's way should have been the priority.]
Have you ever even had any sweets before?
[The way he describes his food as simply nutrients for metabolic needs, he doesn't sound like he particularly enjoys his meals.]

[ They were meant to kill the Grimm, after all. That was what they'd been training for. ]
Those familiars aren't harmful, though; you're right about that. It's an unfortunate situation to be in, but I don't think you have much of a say in what kind of familiar you've been given, so tolerating it is...probably for the best.

[Oda snaps his fingers for Kimon, his oni familiar (sized appropriately to about Oda's own human size, of course.)]
Oni do not exist in my timeline of Japan. I am as certain of this, as I have personally traveled everywhere to become the Demon King, a monster more fearsome than them, to ensure my people were more afraid of me than fiction. Some of the familiars speak. Mine does not. Either he cares not to, or chooses not to, it matters not. They choose forms that they deem their best fit for us individually, whatever you think of it.
[GRRRR AND NOW, Nobunaga loses his own cool and lets some of his unmitigated arrogance and contempt slide through. He really IS awful at trying to conceal... anything.]
Your society is weak!
[Ugh. It's like a distorted mirror. He can't help it. There's a LOT to be said for militarism, and yet... that was never what Nobunaga wanted. How can you break castes if everyone is forced to a rank? He never sought peace the way Mitsuhide and others did, but enjoying life more than just surviving it! Was that what humanity was doomed to in certain timelines?!]
Absolutely pathetic. Is that the best humanity has left?! You're so desperate to survive you lost the capacity to enjoy life? Better to be overcome by a stronger species entirely then!
Listen closely, Ensign Ledo:
The point of war has never been only to survive. If you think like that, you will always lose.
Efficient development... [He just absolutely snarls at that.] Such minimalist thinking, I won't accept it!
You're not even an effective tool or pawn! Your spirit is so broken I cannot even see the cracks to fix it! It's like they've attempted to train you into a mindless weapon, Feh.... as if that isn't far more inferior! [GRRR GRRR--]
[At this his own familiar actually does intervene finally, taking the communicator out of Nobunaga's hands gently, and replacing it with... a candy bar.]
[Yes.]
[He gives his oni a look, munches on the candy bar, and upon calming down a lot, takes the comm back.]
Sorry, Ensign. I'm not furious with you. Obviously, just your flawed timeline. Do not -- [GRITS HIS TEETH AND GRRRRR.]
[JUST GLARES AT HIS ONI FOR A MOMENT.]
[Back to the comm:] Do you play Go? [Yes, he's asking Ledo.]

Then how do you deal with your enemies when they threaten your people? If you must try to prevent conflict, that means it may occur at any time regardless of your efforts. Your time would be better spent making preparations.
