—ing something. I don't know, it made a noise and when I picked it up, and my finger slipped across the damn screen and now I don't know what I'm looking at.

[The murmuring of another, somewhat higher-pitched voice. Words can't be made out, but it sounds amused.]

Holly please, I genuinely have no idea what I'm doing with this thing. Can you help? Look it's [Pause, sounds of things being shifted, Chris might be picking it up.] ...it's showing a portrait of me now. Holly, why is it showing a portrait of me? Wait, no it's...some sort of mirror function? Why would...ah!

[A *thump* sound as the phone hits the floor. Immediately a picture is uploaded to the network; Chris' face, half off-screen, tilted at an odd angle with a look of surprise as the phone drops from her hand after she accidentally selfies herself. Behind her is Holly, her familiar, hovering in the air and looking very amused. More shifting sounds as the phone is picked up.]

What the blazes...my upload has been completed? Load of what?

[Audible laughter in the background]

And may I ask what is so funny?

Blast it, am I on the...the network again? Must have knocked the phone into it when I dropped it.

Yeah, I figured out the strange box quickly enough. Like everything else. [That last bit is muttered under his breath but audible. But he's not really trying to hide with a username like that. If he'd have wanted to hide his identity his human name and text would do the job.]

Definitely would recommend picking a better angle the next time you send a picture of yourself over the network.

Did you? I should like to lean on your expertise in that case. What functions would you say are the most important to learn first? [She and Hawk are alike enough that what works most for him will probably be the same for her.]

[She scoffs audibly.] I don't intend to make a habit of plastering my likeness all over it! Such vanity is unbecoming of a knight.

[And she never knows how to smile properly. Part of the reason she carried on her father's tradition of not having portraits done, especially when you have to hold it for an unbearably long time.]

[He laughs.] I'm no expert, I just read the whole help book it has inside. [He gives her directions on how to find that.]

[He admits, he's actually growing to like Chris. She's a lot like Lucien and that's something he can respect.]

It's not vanity when not done intentionally. Would suck though if history were to remember that likeness instead of one more befitting. Even my wanted posters are more flattering.

[She listens intently and with some difficulty (working the touchscreen is still a bit finnicky for her) manages to find her way to the "Help" section] Oh. Oh, here it is. Thank the Goddess, this will make it much easier to use.

Ha, I suppose that's true. I've never had much use for portraiture, to be honest. A portrait never tells a complete story. What we wish to present to the world is often not who we truly are. I'd rather I be remembered by my actions and deeds, and not some...some likeness that purports to be some idealized version of myself.

[There is only one portrait of Chris Lightfellow in existence, of herself and her mother Anna, sat for when she was still a child. It hangs in the dining room of Lightfellow Hall back in Vinay del Zexay. It was taken before her father went missing, but he did not join them for it. There are no portraits of Wyatt Lightfellow. She knows why that is now.]

Quite true. Portraits and statues of long dead heroes never seem to show their deeds or give a hint as to the sort of person they were. They always are staring ahead and with determined look on their face instead of vanquishing foes or the protecting civilians. Not sure if such poor portrayals are really better than just being forgotten.

There was some sort of mirror mode that the....well, I suppose you all probably heard that. Is that the "selphee" mode of which you speak?

It's just a thing. It's a thing people do sometimes.

Oh. It's when your goal is to take a photo of yourself. People like to do that and post pictures of themselves sometimes. Do you want help with the device? Or, do you need help? I don't mind showing you the ropes if you have a few few moments.

Ah, it's a form of portraiture, then. [She can see the appeal of having it done instantaneously rather than having to sit for interminable periods of time.]

I should be obliged if you'd help. Apart from finding many, ah, "videos" of cats and the basic communication options, I understand little else of this device's capabilities. I know that it is possible to communicate via voice, letters, or moving portraits, but I find trying to switch between each type difficult. Are there rules of etiquette associated with their use? Let us start there.

I'm Louis. And I don't mind. Videos of cats are...I understand totally normal parts of the internet. Weird in theory to me, but my image of cats is massively different from a human's.

[ It's hard to imagine a man well over six feet fitting himself into a box because he's a cat. Because that's his image. ]

You can use voice, text, video. You can take still photos, navigate the internet and have search options. You can also do things like listen to music, too. And - of course the videos. There's a lot to learn, so I don't blame someone unfamiliar for not knowing.

Louis? [A pause, then a small chuckle. First another Chris, and now a Duck and a Louis at that.] A pleasure, then. May I ask how you mean, "different"?

[Yes, they're from different worlds and all, but a cat is a cat...isn't it?]

Yes, someone just helped me find the instruction guide. It's helping considerably, though I'm not sure I'll find a great deal of these functions useful. The communications certainly, but...well, I've never been much for music. I wouldn't even know where to begin with that.

The ones you keep as pets. The cute, small, quadrupeds? Don't exist.

Just use what is most necessary to you. That's what I do. There's no reason to try and navigate something useless to you, anyway. And once you figure out how the stuff you need works, the other stuff will be easier, anyway.

No, devices like this are far beyond anything my world is capable of. Perhaps the Sindar might have had something equivalent, but if that was the case, the knowledge was lost along with their civilization.

Technically, I'm from the McDuck clan of planet earth! So, not exactly. But it's no biggie, I know my type is pretty rare around here.

I admit, I'm surprised, but pleased regardless. The Duck Clan of my world are fine soldiers. I've been proud to fight along side some of them recently. Is your McDuck Clan of a similar persuasion? Either way, it is good to make your acquaintance.

The greeters of this world would do well to give these devices with a written manual of sorts.

It is something of a comfort at least to know I'm not the only one to have embarrassed themselves in such a way over these devices at least.

Handling them becomes easier with time, though they still seem ... fragile for all their importance. Though perhaps I am simply accustomed to sturdy equipment.

Offering critique when there is a hanging threat of being left behind in a strange new world seemed unwise. I am unsure where such suggestions would be pointed, admittedly.
