Assuming one doesn't want to make everyone their enemy by random target practice, what is the best way to practice dark magic?
My familiar isn't being helpful in suggesting ideas.
Any other information about the magic is appreciated as well. I'm very new.
You can also tell me the best places to get tea.

--Anyway, onto actually useful information.]
From what I've seen, dark magic is one of the more versatile types here. Sure, it all requires a target, but the effects one can inflict pretty much run the gamut. Crueler effects are the most famous but it has more to do with status effects like slowing speed, confusing sense of direction, increasing or lowering friction... things like that.
Frankly, calling it "dark" seems a bit pejorative. Ha ha ha
Depending on what effect you're going for, it seems to work fine on objects. Effects that activate when touched, temperature changes, and the like. So getting a feel for the magic in general is easiest that way. But for the rest you may need an (un)willing practice partner. :)

At least it sounds more useful than I initially thought. For combat purposes and otherwise. But figures I would get the pejorative magic.
I might start with object practice and worry about the rest later.

Or trial by fire, practice on some local trolls.

Bring a friend, and if you have one, a gun.

[She does, in fact, have one friend from Lunatia, but sometimes admitting such things is boring.]
Does a sword work?

But I imagine so. They're big though.

I can offer what they would do, if you would like.

Some guy is going to pay me for letting him practice his dark magic on me.
[ She's literally only being helpful because she doesn't realize it's Raven yet... ]

I hope he pays you a good amount.
no subject
Yeah. We negotiated it before I let him do anything.

[She almost still does, let's be right.]
That's good.

[Not that she particurarly wants to go either, but it's not like they know they're even talking about the same world.]

[ Emerald also doesn't know that she could do anything but she trusts herself to survive more than she does a bunch of strangers and enemies. ]

But that leaves everyone else, so you've got a point there.

Besides, this isn't the worst world out there.

Or curse whichever annoying creature's this month's bounty on the quest board. You might make enemies of them, but no one's going to care.

Targeting monsters is an idea though. I hadn't thought about using curses on anything other than other mages.
