Assuming one doesn't want to make everyone their enemy by random target practice, what is the best way to practice dark magic?

My familiar isn't being helpful in suggesting ideas.

Any other information about the magic is appreciated as well. I'm very new.

You can also tell me the best places to get tea.

Ah, a fellow dark-type user. Welcome to the circus. [(CHEERFULLY) HE HATES IT HERE

--Anyway, onto actually useful information.]

From what I've seen, dark magic is one of the more versatile types here. Sure, it all requires a target, but the effects one can inflict pretty much run the gamut. Crueler effects are the most famous but it has more to do with status effects like slowing speed, confusing sense of direction, increasing or lowering friction... things like that.
Frankly, calling it "dark" seems a bit pejorative. Ha ha ha

Depending on what effect you're going for, it seems to work fine on objects. Effects that activate when touched, temperature changes, and the like. So getting a feel for the magic in general is easiest that way. But for the rest you may need an (un)willing practice partner. :)

You too? I have to admit, ending up with dark magic felt a bit on the nose, myself. Have to wonder if they match these things with a purpose.

The best way seems to be to just find a training dummy and make it hate existing by cursing it over and over.

Or trial by fire, practice on some local trolls.

Word of caution, especially with trolls: Don't go alone.

Yes. They're ugly, big, and cleverer than they look.

Bring a friend, and if you have one, a gun.

No idea. I don't have one.

But I imagine so. They're big though.

The magic here and in my world is different, but I did have several allies who specialized in dark magic.

I can offer what they would do, if you would like.

One ally who had a habit of cursing others made certain she always had ingredients to spare. Herbs, animal parts, the like. It can also come in handy if you plan on doing any potion or elixers.

I don't think all the familiars are all they're cracked up to be.
Some guy is going to pay me for letting him practice his dark magic on me.

Mine's a smaller version of a murderous elephant from my world. I'm not letting it anywhere near my inn room.

Yeah. We negotiated it before I let him do anything.

Apparently we go home if we don't have our familiars, or I would've already.

Time is frozen, so you have to rely on all these other people to save you. Have you met anyone here you really trust to make sure that gets done more than yourself?

[ Emerald also doesn't know that she could do anything but she trusts herself to survive more than she does a bunch of strangers and enemies. ]

One person isn't inspirational, that's for sure.

Besides, this isn't the worst world out there.

Learn to not get caught using people for target practice.

Or curse whichever annoying creature's this month's bounty on the quest board. You might make enemies of them, but no one's going to care.

Really? They're insanely useful against creatures. Makes them a lot easier to take down.
